Historical profile San Marino is completely surrounded by Italy. It is the oldest surviving republic in the world, having been an independent republic since the year 301 AD. 1600 The constitution was ratified on 8 October. 1926 An additional electoral law was passed, which serves some of the functions of a constitution. 1988 San Marino joined the Council of Europe. 1990–92 Governed by a coalition of Partito Democratico Progressista (PDP) (Progressive Democratic Party), (ex-communists) and Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese (PDCS) (San Marino Christian Democratic Party). 1992 In March PDCS formed a coalition with the Partito Socialista Sammarinese (PSS) (San Marino Socialist Party). San Marino became a member of the UN. 1993 In the general election, the PDCS won 26 seats and the PSS, 14 seats; the coalition continued. 1998 After the elections, the coalition continued. 2001 Differences within the PDCS/PSS coalition government led to early parliamentary elections (they were originally scheduled for May 2003). The elections resulted in a continuation of the coalition government. 2002 San Marino replaced the lira with the euro currency. Antonio Lazzaro Volpinari and Giovanni Francesco Ugolini took office as captains-regent for six months from April. Giuseppe Maria Morganti and Mauro Chiaruzzi took over on 1 October. 2003 Pier Marino Menicucci and Giovanni Giannoni were installed as captains-regent on 1 April and on 1 October, Giovanni Lonfernini and Valeria Ciavatta took over. 2004 On 1 April, Paolo Bollini (Socialist) and Marino Riccardi (Democrat) were installed as captains-regent. Giuseppe Arzilli (Christian Democrat) and Roberto Raschi (Socialist) took office as captains-regent on 1 October. 2005 Fausta Simona Morganti (Democrat) and Cesare Antonio Gasperoni (Christian Democrat) took office as captains-regent on 1 April.
